Violence, Abuse and Mental Health Network

Opportunities for Change
Find out more

What we do...

The VAMHN aims to reduce the prevalence of mental health problems among children, adults, and the elderly, by bringing together experts with different ways of thinking about violence, abuse and mental health - some with personal experience of these issues, others with expertise from the work that they do, and survivor researchers with both. We hope to understand, prevent and reduce the impact of violence and abuse on mental health.

Themes

The research and other activity done by the network will generally fall into four key themes

Measurement

Measuring the extent and impact of domestic and sexual violence in relation to mental health

Picture

Understanding

Understanding the pathways that lead to domestic and sexual violence and their relationship to mental health problems

Interventions

Planning interventions and services to prevent, reduce and address domestic and sexual violence in people with mental health problems or at risk of developing mental health problems

Coercive Control

Coercive control sits at the heart of domestic abuse, but also plays a central role in many other forms of violence and abuse. More research and awareness is needed around the mechanics and nuances of this form of abuse
